Antananarivo
Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, is undergoing urbanization so rapid that it is difficult to manage or control, leading to the development of informal and precarious housing. The expansion of these private spaces is taking place at the expense of public space, with densely populated neighborhoods and few or no meeting or breathing spaces. What's more, urban growth has had an impact on traffic, and the capital is now experiencing major mobility problems.
Urban development projects (Lalankely and Mobilité douce) financed by the Agence française de développement (AFD) aim to open up the city, improve sanitation and enhance mobility for the people of Antananarivo. The Antananarivo UFI operates within this context and supports these two main urban projects of the AFD. This involves the co-design and co-construction of public spaces and facilities designed to encourage active mobility, using participatory methods and community engagement.
Objectives
- To support the Commune Urbaine d'Antananarivo (CUA) in implementing a co-production approach in its policy of developing public spaces and active mobility involving different stakeholder groups(residents, users, local authorities, landowners, etc.);
- Support the development of neighborhood initiatives through the co-construction of developments with residents.
Results
- The Urban Fabric Initiative takes into account the uses and expectations of local residents in terms of neighborhood life, sports and culture, as well as the barriers to access to these services and facilities for certain members of the population;
- Developments and initiatives are carried out and managed by the mobilization of civil society and/or local residents to develop qualitative and inclusive public spaces;
- The capacities of project stakeholders are strengthened through training sessions and tailored support, as well as project monitoring, evaluation and capitalization.
Implementation
The project is being implemented by GRET and Cabanon Vertical in close collaboration with the Commune Urbaine d'Antananarivo (CUA).
