The Urban Fabric Initiative Nairobi : an incubator in the making
A new urban nursery will be built in Nairobi, Kenya, as part of the KISIP phase 2 urban restructuring project. KISIP is a project to rehabilitate shanty towns in 15 Kenyan cities, with the aim of improving living conditions for residents by financing infrastructure and improving services.
An urban incubator will be set up to support this urban project by proposing developments and improvements to public spaces and community infrastructure in a number of precarious Nairobi neighbourhoods. These neighbourhoods will be affected by KISIP 2 or were rehabilitated as part of the first phase of KISIP.
The co-design workshop for this future urban incubator was held in Nairobi with around forty participants representing the institutions involved in the urban project, technical and financial partners and representatives of civil society and grassroots community organisations. The workshop provided an opportunity to consolidate the values and principles of this future incubator, known as the "urban fabric initiative", to question and debate the methods of implementation and the target areas, and to promote the many experiences and expertise in participatory, transitional and collaborative urban planning in the city of Nairobi.
The new nursery is due to open at the beginning of 2022 and will be of great added value to the nursery network!
