An analytical framework for inclusive urban space design

This operational guide is a tool to assist in the design and evaluation of inclusive urban spaces. Produced by the urban planning studio Approche.s! in collaboration with the steering group for the PAPU programme and the teams at Pépinières urbaines, it offers practical strategies to ensure that public spaces meet the needs of everyone.

• Target audience: urban planners, architects, landscape architects, engineers, sociologists and community engagement officers.
  
• Objective: to identify inequalities (related to gender, age, health and social circumstances) and propose concrete measures to improve website accessibility.
  
• Areas of application: all types of development (public spaces and built environments) and schemes (sport, leisure, transport, culture, etc.).

The framework sets out 16 criteria in the form of operational questions organised around six pillars:

• Mobility: accessibility, transport use and barriers to travel.
• Usage: gendered usage patterns, user comfort and barriers to usage.
• Sense of security: anxiety-inducing spaces, visibility and lighting strategy.
• Participation: involving residents in the co-design of the construction project.
• Governance and management: parity in decision-making and equality in the upkeep of the premises.
• Symbolic presence: representation in signage, artwork and events.

The workbook is designed to be used in a prioritised manner depending on the context. It supports the project from the pre-project (budgeting) and the assessment, through to the co-design and the final review (monitoring and evaluation indicators).
