Woodcamp Community Corner: a participatory project in the heart of the Paynesville neighbourhood
From vacant lot to shared space, Woodcamp's future Community Corner symbolises the rebirth of a neighbourhood thanks to the participation of its residents.
“This project not only transforms a piece of land, it strengthens our bonds and restores hope to the entire community.”
— David K. Varla, Chair of the Woodcamp Community
In Woodcamp, a suburb of Paynesville, Liberia, a long-unused plot of land will soon become a vibrant and inclusive community space. Coordinated by UFI-Monrovia, and in partnership with the Ministry of Public Works, the Paynesville City Corporation and the Monrovia City Corporation, a participatory co-design process has brought together women, young people, elders, religious leaders and children to think together about this new space.
Three stages of co-construction
- Identifying needs: community mapping, discussions on cohesion and local priorities.
- Designing the concept: using interactive maps and models, collective sketches.
- Joint approval: public presentation of the final plans and signing of a community resolution to commence the work.

Planned developments
The future Woodcamp Community Corner will include:
- a semi-open multi-purpose room for meetings, parties and training sessions;
- a children's play area;
- outdoor rest areas and public lighting for added safety.
UFI-Monrovia will construct the hall and outdoor facilities, while MIDP will build a two-storey building with a community space and offices.
The next step? Commencing the work.
The complete tender dossier has been submitted to the AFD. The first works are expected to begin by the end of 2025.
