A second UFI upcoming in Madagascar
An identification mission for a new UFI in the north and centre of Madagascar took place from 10 to 18 March 2025. The programme team went on site to identify the sites and talk to the stakeholders.
The mission brought together, for the programme team, Florent Chiappero and Bénédicte Hinschberger from urbaMonde, alongside representatives from AFD Madagascar and the Malagasy Ministry of Decentralization and Territorial Planning.
Together, they visited several sites in the cities of Antsirabe and Mahajanga, and met with mayors, municipal technicians and civil society actors. A list of the most suitable sites for implementing the participatory and inclusive methodology — central to the UFI approach — will be submitted to AFD.
This initial step in the process will lead to the appointment of an operational team in 2025, with implementation starting in 2026. Special attention will be given to the challenge of launching operational activities simultaneously in two cities located over 700 km apart.
The UFI network will soon include a second nursery in Madagascar — the PUMA — in addition to the one already underway in Antananarivo since 2023.
