Transforming public spaces in the Lakpazee, Shoe Factory and Woodcamp districts of Monrovia, Liberia
In Monrovia, the Urban Fabric Initiative is supporting the transformation of public spaces in three districts in the east of the capital : Lakpazee, Shoe Factory and Woodcamp.
Focus on the Shoe Factory site
At Shoe Factory, local residents got together with the support of the local authorities and the Barnesville district to identify and secure a plot of land destined to house the future public space. A fine illustration of the participatory dynamic at work in Liberia.
"At the beginning, many residents of Shoe Factory were reluctant to participate in the UFI project activities, but following constant engagement residents, the entire community is now fully involved in the project."
Aaron B. Harris - Président du Comité de gestion communautaire de Shoe Factory
The initiative will have a tangible impact on the daily lives of local residents by creating a space dedicated to strengthening social ties and community life. The final stage in the process is the legalisation of the land title, supported by the community committee.
