News from the Monrovia UFI

The recently launched the UFI Monrovia in Liberia is part of a wider integrated development framework for the city, underlining the importance of a collaborative and innovative approach to improving urban infrastructure.

The Monrovia Urban Fabric Initiative (UFI Monrovia), operated by Mercy Corps, will be implemented in three districts of Greater Monrovia from March 2024 to February 2026. The project, financed by AFD, will pilot the upgrading or development of small-scale public spaces to improve access, use and management of public spaces that are resilient to the effects of climate change.

UFI Monrovia will co-design and co-create community spaces in the Lakpazee, Wood Camp and Shoe Factory neighbourhoods. The lessons learned from UFI will be incorporated into the implementation of the Monrovia Integrated Development Project (MIDP), an infrastructure project financed by AFD to the tune of 40 million euros and targeting the same communities. The UFI was recently launched by a mission team from the UFI delegation, including AFD, the GRET, Cabanon Vertical, on Ministère des Travaux Publics and Mercy Corps came to meet the teams and train them in the Urban Fabric Initiatives methodology. The roll-out continues:

  • An important milestone was reached with the completion of the community assessment. UFI Monrovia visited all three neighbourhoods and established valuable relationships with local community leaders, paving the way for effective collaboration and understanding of community needs.
  • A memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Public Works through the Monrovia Integrated Development Project has been drafted and submitted for comment.
