Kianja Andraisoro: the Pépinière Urbaine d'Antanarivo inaugurates a public space in the heart of the capital

On 4 March 2025, the Andraisoro district celebrated the official opening of Kianja Andraisoro, a new public space designed with and for the local community. This project marks a key stage for the Pépinière Urbaine d'Antananarivo (PUA).

In Malagasy, Kianja means "land", "square" or "public space". The result of a collaborative process launched in 2023, Kianja is much more than a simple development: it embodies a renewed vision of urban design: inclusive, collective and adapted to the realities on the ground. Soft mobility, free access, local activities, attention to women and young people... everything has been designed to strengthen social cohesion and meet the concrete needs of residents.

The management of the site has been entrusted to the association AT2B (Andraisoro Tia BasketBall), in collaboration with the fokontany (the basic administrative unit in Madagascar, equivalent to a neighborhood or village, playing a central role in local governance). Several local organizations, also supported by the PUA, will carry out community engagement and animation projects at the site.

The Kianja Andraisoro symbolises a broader ambition: to create a network of lively public spaces in Antananarivo's neighbourhoods and to encourage the emergence of new ways of doing things in the city, hand in hand with its users.
