Activating public spaces in Kahawa Soweto: a community dynamic in motion

On 5 and 6 November 2025, the Kahawa Soweto neighbourhood came alive with cultural, creative and community activities organised as part of the Nairobi Urban Fabric Initiative (UFI). These two days brought together residents, local stakeholders and students from the University of Nairobi around a common goal: to transform shared spaces into lively, inclusive places that foster social cohesion.

Day 1 — Movement, health and conviviality

The first day began in a dynamic and warm atmosphere.
Outdoor Zumba sessions brought energy, fitness and conviviality to the streets, while a free medical camp offered essential health services. Younger children enjoyed games and entertainment, creating safe and fun spaces in the heart of the neighbourhood.

In the evening, the screening of Jinna Mutune-Odede's film LEO brought residents together around an inspiring story of courage, solidarity and resilience. The shared meal, prepared by the Congo Soweto Group Kitchen community kitchen, extended this moment of conviviality.

Day 2 — Creativity, co-construction and citizen engagement

The second day began with a collective clean-up operation, illustrating the importance of a healthy and well-maintained environment. The highlight of the day was the collaborative creation of a mural, co-created by residents and students. This collective work symbolises the unity, hope and creativity of the neighbourhood.

Throughout the day, music, dancing, face painting and a hot shower station helped to create a festive yet practical atmosphere, true to the spirit of public space activation: meeting needs while strengthening the social fabric of the neighbourhood.

The Kaeni Soba Business Centre has seen exceptional engagement, illustrating how such an initiative can strengthen not only social life but also local economic activity. The centre's services and the dishes offered by Congo Soweto have been widely appreciated.

About placemaking

The activation of public spaces — or placemaking — refers to a participatory process through which communities reconfigure or reinvest in their living spaces in order to make them more welcoming, functional and socially dynamic.

This process is based on three fundamental principles:

  • involve residents in identifying needs and designing activities;
  • promote local practices and identities;
  • strengthen the sense of belonging through shared and creative use of spaces.

The revitalisation of public spaces is not limited to physical development: it also encompasses cultural, sporting and social activities that strengthen cohesion, health and economic development.

A demonstration of the power of community design

These two days demonstrated the potential of participatory and community-based design to bring about lasting change in urban neighbourhoods. By mobilising residents, students and local entrepreneurs, the Urban Fabric Initiative shows how the activation of public spaces can become a catalyst for social cohesion, well-being and economic dynamism.
